CLIPP

CLIPP Editorial Board.

April 2008 - The Editorial Board held its 2008 spring meeting April 6 in Atlanta, Georgia. The primary focus of the meeting was an in-depth discussion about the pedagogical approach of the CLIPP cases and the available technology of the residing software of the CLIPP cases. The discussions focused on the structure of the CLIPP cases with respect to polling questions, questions with peer response feedback, pre and post network cards, and evaluating the networks.

CLIPP Final Exam Question Writing Group

April 2008 - The CLIPP Final Exam Question Writing Group held its first meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. The goal of the group is to increase the current question bank available for the CLIPP Final Exam from 150 questions to 300. The meeting focused on how to write an NBME style question assigning each group member a series of CLIPP cases for which to write questions for. This group will interact with the CLIPP Editorial Board to insure the questions address content adequately covered in the cases.

CLIPP Editorial Board.

October 2007 - The Editorial Board held its 2007 fall meeting October 3-5 in Lebanon, New Hampshire. The Board was joined by Dr. Lyuba Konopasek, co-chair of the COMSEP Curriculum Task Force, and Dr. Kimberly Gifford, a pediatric educator at Dartmouth assisting the Editorial Board. The primary focus of the meeting was a comprehensive review of the extent to which CLIPP covers the current COMSEP curriculum. Using a content scoring “matrix” developed by Drs. Fall and Gifford, each Associate Editor reviewed the relative strengths and weaknesses of each CLIPP case and made recommendations for further editing. The Matrix will be the driving force behind the work of the Editorial Board and the Associate Editors over the coming year, as we work to ensure that CLIPP continues to comprehensively cover the COMSEP curriculum to the broadest and most appropriate degree possible.

SIMPLE

Update

May 2008- case development is advancing according to plan. Many of the individual case authors have submitted the first draft of their cases. The case submissions have been well done creating great excitement about the project – the authors have done a wonderful job! Once submitted the cases move through the editing process for medical content, core curriculum content, and structure. The combined efforts of medical editors, the SIMPLE Project Development Group, the authors, and iInTIME staff are gaining momentum with each case submission. The 36 virtual patient cases are expected to be completed and available for pilot testing to all CDIM members for the academic year beginning July 1, 2008

SIMPLE Project Development Group

April 2008 - The SIMPLE Project Development Group (SPDG) is responsible for matching the CDIM-Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Core Medicine

Clerkship Curriculum content to the SIMPLE cases, ensuring that the cases cover the curriculum as comprehensively as possible, and that the cases remain appropriate for 3rd year students in their Medicine clerkship. The SPDG will also oversee peer review and pilot testing of the SIMPLE cases in the coming academic year.

The SPDG held its 2008 meeting April 22-24 in Lebanon, New Hampshire. The primary objectives of the meeting were to review the project status in preparation for pilot testing in July, establishing an ambitious research agenda, and planning for future developments once the SIMPLE cases are fully developed.

iInTIME Begins Collaboration with Internal Medicine

September 2007 — The Institute for Innovative Technology In Medical Education is pleased to announce that it has entered into agreement with the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) to develop SIMPLE — Simulated Internal Medicine Patient Learning Experience, a series of 36 virtual patient cases designed to comprehensively teach the CDIM-SGIM Core Medicine Clerkship Curriculum Guide in a manner permitting the program to be completed by an average medical student during an average clerkship in internal medicine. This collaborative effort is modeled on the success of the CLIPP project, which developed virtual patient cases for Pediatrics that are now used in most Pediatric clerkships in the US and Canada. SIMPLE cases will be developed during the 2007-2008 academic year, and will be available to institutions for pilot testing in the 2008-2009 academic year.

Based on the proven iInTIME Learning System (ILS), a SIMPLE Project Development Group (SPDG) consisting of CDIM project leaders was established. In July of this year, the SPDG gathered at iInTIME headquarters to begin the collaborative development efforts. Furthering these efforts is an authors’ training workshop scheduled for October at CDIM’s 2007 National Meeting in Pittsburgh.

January 2008 – The Institute for Innovative Technology In Medical Education (iInTIME) is pleased to announce it has entered into agreement with the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) to develop a series of virtual patient cases designed to comprehensively teach the Family Medicine Curriculum Resource. The cases developed will be very similar to iInTIME's other virtual patient cases - CLIPP and SIMPLE - and will be developed collaboratively by STFM members, supported by iInTIME staff using the proven iInTIME Learning System .

In April of this year, iInTIME will meet with an STFM Advisory Group at STFM's 2008 Annual Spring Conference in Baltimore to begin outlining the development of the virtual patient cases and to establish a Project Development Group consisting of STFM project leaders. Plans are underway to begin case authoring in January 2009, and cases are expected to be available for pilot testing during the 2009-10 academic year
