The Institute for Innovative Technology In Medical Education (iInTIME), a not-for-profit organization launched by Dartmouth pediatricians Dr. Leslie Fall and Dr. Norm Berman, was established in 2006 as a proactive response to changing requirements in medical education. The mission of iInTIME is to advance medical education through the collaborative development, maintenance, and research of innovative and comprehensive computer-assisted instruction programs. iInTIME meets its mission through its role as a developer and distributor of virtual patient cases for third year medical students throughout the United States and Canada.
For developing virtual patient cases, the proven iInTIME Learning System (ILS) harnesses the power of medical educator communities working collaboratively toward the parallel goals of improving student learning while supporting the needs of the medical educator. The ILS provides the necessary framework to transform a core curriculum into virtual patient cases that will be widely used, and furthers this framework by continually revising and editing cases to include cutting-edge advances in medicine. By capitalizing on a wealth of shared medical knowledge, a professional commitment to academic medicine, and the power of collaboration, iInTIME is able to produce high-quality virtual patient cases that instill this medical knowledge and professional commitment to students using the strengths of computer-assisted learning.
iInTIME supports each step in the development process and beyond through continued collaborations and with an infrastructure of dedicated staff believing in the organization’s mission. iInTIME’s infrastructure and support system is designed to enhance student and teacher success. iInTIME support includes the iInTIME Learning System authoring software and pedagogy; training and support for development teams and editorial boards; an extensive case evaluation process; successful and effective integration methods; software and case support infrastructure; and institutional access to student log data.
